The Unexpected Resale Platform – Facebook Marketplace!

A selection of some items we have available for sale on Facebook marketplace includes 2 vintage tin trucks and a vintage denim jacket

We sell on multiple platforms. A lot of resellers do as well. One we recently have had more success with is Facebook Marketplace. They’ve recently changed how their shipping option works and it is much more user friendly. Let’s talk about some of the details that make Facebook Marketplace a good place for resale!

Pickup Available

Since it is geared for use with your local social networks, pickup is an attractive option. You can arrange a meet up or a porch pickup (you know your own limits and comfort levels). This bypasses delivery/shipping altogether. Safety is of course a concern, and many people are opting for contact-less options these days. If for any reason you do decide to meet a buyer or seller in person, some safety tips to consider:

  • Meet in a public place
  • Don’t share your personal information
  • Use an electronic payment instead of cash (you have protection if item is not as described)
  • Examine the seller’s ratings and profiles
  • Tell others you are meeting up, share your location on your phone

Delivery Available

Facebook marketplace recently updated their delivery charges to be more manageable and user friendly! This allows you to reach beyond your local area, to anywhere in the country! You can easily decide who pays the shipping cost when you create your listing. Depending on how you set up your listings, you can choose buyer pays, Facebook pays, or you pay. If you don’t see a Free Shipping option, it may not be available to you. Free Shipping is only offered to select sellers (I don’t know how to get on that list!). When you select that you will pay the shipping costs, those costs get deducted from your payout.

This feature is only available on the Facebook app for iPhone or Android, not facebook.com or Facebook Lite.

Once you receive the order, you can create and print a prepaid delivery label. To create a prepaid delivery label:

  1. From the Facebook app for iPhone or Android, tap Marketplace.
  2. Tap .
  3. Select Sending orders.
  4. Tap the order that you want to create a label for.
  5. Create delivery label.

You should receive an email with your prepaid delivery label. These tips are directly from Facebook in their Marketplace help section.

Not Perfect

The biggest downside to Facebook Marketplace shipping is that you REALLY have to pay attention to your item’s weight. You cannot change it’s weight after purchase, and if you mis-weighed or guesstimated, you could end up eating shipping costs. We also noticed a glitch when saving your items as Drafts to finish later, it reverts some of the fields to defaults. Including shipping and some item details, so you really have to check all of those drop down boxes when finalizing listings!

Yet another addition in resale options, I feel like resale is a lot more common now then it was a year ago. More resellers out in the world, on so many platforms! Do you notice more resellers? Is resale becoming more popular? Let us know what you think! And if you haven’t set up selling on Facebook Marketplace yet, you should give it a try!
